Texas Farmers Union Calls
For Farm Bill Support

Waco, Texas (May 15, 2008) - Texas Farmers Union (TFU) today called on members of the U.S. House and Senate to vote in support of the farm bill when it comes time for a vote this week.

The time has come for Congress to pass a new farm bill,” TFU President, Wes Sims said.

Sims said the bill will benefit not just farmers and ranchers but will aid consumers through funding increases for nutrition, conservation and rural development programs. The 2008 Farm Bill includes a provision that will allow after many delays, mandatory country of origin labeling (COOL) to be implemented.

”COOL is popu1ar with consumers and producers alike,” Sims said. “TFU has pushed for COOL for many years and we are pleased to see that the new farm bill will finally allow it to take effect.”

Another Farmers Union priority that will be included in the 2008 Farm Bill is the creation of a permanent disaster assistance program. “Farmers and ranchers have no control over the weather and this program will provide the necessary assistance needed when Mother Nature strikes.” Sims said. Also, the new Farm Bill will keep in place the counter-cylical provisions of the 2002 Farm Bill.

Despite the many benefits the farm bill offers, and the bipartisan support the bill enjoys, President Bush has announced he will veto the bill. Sims called on members of the Texas congressional delegation to listen to their constituents and support this vital legislation.
